FPL Renews contract at Manchester.

Flight Precision Ltd (FPL), one half of Cobham Flight Inspection, has concluded a renewal of its 5-year contract with the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) to conduct the Group's mandatory Flight Inspection requirements. MAG comprises Manchester, East Midlands, Humberside and Bournemouth Airports, which serve destinations all over the world.

Airports rely on their ground based Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) to guide aircraft to the runway accurately in all weather conditions. FPL's aircraft are equipped with highly accurate measuring systems that allow the aircraft to compute its position continuously in 3 dimensions, to an accuracy of about 6 ins/15 cm. This level of accuracy enables FPL to confirm that MAG's ILS installations, some of which allow 'Autoland' capability in thick fog or very poor visibility, are providing the extreme precision required of this type of equipment.

In addition to the periodic 'routine' checks, FPL will also attend MAG's occasional request to conduct 'one-off' checks to commission new or replacement ground based navigational equipments, as these are introduced into service. Between them, FPL's expertise and MAG's engineers ensure millions of passengers arrive at their destination safely and more reliably.

FPL has won this contract after international tender during which FPL demonstrated a unique combination of technical competence and value for money.

FPL Wins Portuguese Airforce contract.

The Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) has awarded Flight Precision Ltd (FPL) - a Business Unit within Cobham Flight Inspection (CFI) - a short-term contract to conduct the internationally legislated Flight Inspection requirements of its ground-based aeronautical radio and radar navigation aids. Under the contract, FPL will conduct flight inspections of the Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Precision Approach Radars (PAR) and area navigation aids (TACAN, VOR and NDB) used by the PoAF, both on the Portuguese mainland and in the Madeira Islands.

The PoAF relies on their ILS and PAR installations to guide aircraft to the runway accurately in poor weather conditions. Regular airborne checks of navigational aids are conducted to ensure that ground equipments continue to radiate reliable and accurate information. Among other procedures, the ground engineers use this acid test to verify that their regular maintenance activities are keeping the navigational aids operating optimally. Between them, CFI's expertise and the PoAF's ground engineers will ensure that the operational capability of the Air Force is maintained, no matter the weather.

CFI's aircraft are equipped with highly accurate measuring systems that allow the aircraft to compute its position continuously in 3 dimensions, to an accuracy of about 6 ins/15 cm. This level of accuracy enables CFI to confirm that the ILS and PAR installations are providing the extreme precision required of this type of equipment.

CFI has won this contract after international tender during which FPL demonstrated an unbeatable combination of technical competence and value for money. Especially with its specialised and efficient method of checking PARs, CFI offers a service that allows military authorities to outsource 'second line' activities to the benefit of the Front Line budget.

FPL Wins contact in Spain

AENA, the Spanish Air Navigation Service Provider, recently concluded a 2 year contract with Flight Precision Ltd (FPL), with an option for a 3rd year, to conduct routine Flight Inspection operations in Spain. This contract follows a period of nearly 2 years during which FPL has been the predominant supplier of this important, safety-related, service to AENA.

The contract requires FPL to flight check and calibrate the ground based navigational aids in Spain, ensuring that these facilities are providing reliable and accurate navigational data to aircraft arriving, departing and over-flying Spanish territory, including the Canary Islands. FPL has provided these specialised, technical services to AENA from time to time since 1999. More recently AENA has come to rely on FPL's expertise more and more to provide these checks.

FPL's role also includes proving new arrival and departure routes into and out of airports. Spain is undertaking a programme of route changes that will improve efficiency, reduce fuel burn and therefore carbon emissions whilst reducing noise pollution to those living near to the flight paths.

FPL Renews contract at Birmingham.

Flight Precision Ltd (FPL) recently agreed a 5-year contract with Birmingham International Airport to conduct the airport's mandatory Flight Inspection requirements. Birmingham International Airport has been a long-term customer since FPL became the UK'S premier supplier of this essential, safety related, service, but this is the first time that the Airport has committed to a 5-year contract with FPL.

In addition to the periodic 'routine' checks, FPL has also responded to Birmingham's occasional request for FPL to conduct 'one-off' checks to ensure that airport building developments are not adversely affecting the performance of these highly accurate navigational aids. Between them, FPL's expertise and Birmingham's engineers ensure millions of passengers arrive at their destination safely and more reliably.

FPL Renews contract with the IAA.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has announced that Flight Precision Ltd (FPL) has won a five- year contract for the provision of flight inspection services to Irish state, regional, military and private airports. The contract requires FPL to continue to provide flight inspection of en-route and airports' landing aeronautical navigational aids for which the IAA has regulatory authority.

FPL's aircraft are equipped with highly accurate measuring systems that allow the aircraft to compute its position continuously in 3 dimensions, to an accuracy of about 6 ins/15 cm. This level of accuracy enables FPL to confirm that airport's Instrument Landing Systems that have 'Autoland' capability (which caters for landings in very poor visibility or fog) are providing the extreme precision required of this type of equipment.

FPL Wins Netherlands Contract.

FPL secured the European Tender to Provide Flight Inspection Services to ATC The Netherlands. This prestigious contract was won in the face of intense competition from other European service providers and underlines the quality and reliability of FPL’s service.

FPL Calibration in Portugal.

FPL continues to Provide Back-up Flight Inspection Services to NAV-EP of Portugal and the Portuguese air force. FPL has conducted several detachments to Portuguese territory (including the Azores). This contract for airport and en-route calibrations was agreed following last year’s formal contract to provide back-up services to NAV-EP. Since then, FPL has conducted the majority of flight inspections and procedure evaluations at Lisbon.

FPL Calibration of Belgian Defence Radar.

FPL Conducted a surveillance radar performance calibration programme for the Belgian Defence forces. This exercise measured the performance of Belgian Defence ATC Surveillance Radars prior to an engineering upgrade programme. The flight check programme will be repeated after the upgrade to confirm the anticipated performance improvements are realised.

FPL UK Air Defence Radar Trials.

FPL conducts regular Air Defence Radar Trials for the UK MoD, providing Radar target and other information to ensure the efficiency of the UK's on long-range air defence radars.

FPL Formation Flying for UK PAR Trials.

In 2006 FPL designed, conducted and evaluated extensive trials on the UK MoD’s PAR Equipments. This programme involved close formation flying to establish the discrimination capability of the UK MoD’s precision approach radar fleet.

FPL - Quality Assurance -ISO 9001:2000 compliant.

FPL was formally registered as operating a Quality Management System that was compliant with ISO 9001:2000 on 22 Oct 03. This achievement was no mean feat given the specialist operation that FPL is responsible for and the limited resources at their disposal to complete the transition form the 1994 to the 2000 Standard. As a result of this registration, FPL is entitled to use following logo:
